Glasgow Airport exit from M8 in lock down after ‘suspicious cargo’ evacuation


AN exit from the M8 in Glasgow was locked down due to an ongoing incident at Glasgow Airport.

A section of the airport has been evacuated due to suspicious cargo on a KLM flight.

And Traffic Scotland earlier revealed the eastbound exit slip towards the airport from the M8 was closed – before later updating to say it had been re-opened.

Police, fire service and ambulances are in attendance at the busy transport hub this afternoon.

Bosses for Glasgow Airport said enquiries were ongoing to determine the content of the package.

Police and ambulance crews could be seen close to the runway this afternoon.

A spokesperson for Glasgow Airport said: “At approximately 10am today, the airport fire service attended an arriving KLM flight in response to concerns raised over a piece of cargo.

“Enquiries are ongoing to determine the content of the package and the aircraft has been cordoned off pending the outcome of the investigation.

“All other parts of the airport are fully operational.”

SFRS confirmed that they were at the scene.

A spokesperson said: “We are attending an incident at Glasgow Airport.

“This is a police led incident”.

Worried locals took to social media after spotting the large police presence at the airport.

Fire crews and ambulances could be seen close to the runway.

It’s understood that people travelling from abroad had been told the airport was shut down.
