If you’re on a comfortable- weather boat, ice cream is one of the best ways to handle yourself after a long day in port, a beautiful day by the pool or a good dinner. Luckily, cruise ships offer lots of options for finding your resolve. From simple gentle- serve that you dispense yourself to elaborate sundaes and milkshake concoctions that are both delicious and social media- worthy, what you receive is mostly dependent on what you’re willing to pay. I’ve rounded up some of my own drool- producing personal favorites — both completely and for an additional fee — from six of the most famous cruise lines. ASHLEY KOSCIOLEK/THE POINTS GUYWhere to find it: MSC Cruises ships MSC Bellissima, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Meraviglia, MSC Virtuosa and MSC World Europa ( Jean Philippe ), MSC Seaside, MSC Seaview, MSC Seashore and MSC Seascape ( Venchi ) Cost: Prices start from$ 4.50 per scoop, additional scoops, cones and toppings cost extra. TPG take: Gelato is an European staple, so it’s no wonder that Mediterranean- based boat line MSC Cruises has partnered with some of the finest confectioners to provide gourmet gelato selections on its newest ships. Select arteries feature sources by Venchi Chocolates and Jean- Philippe Maury. In addition to chocolates, macarons and a slew of different sweets, these shops serve up thick for- cost scoops in simple flavors like strawberry, chocolate and vanilla, and another favorites like pistachio, mint chocolate, coffee and stracciatella. Our advice? Consider the Oreo cookie taste in a chocolates- dipped cone at Jean- Philippe Maury. ASHLEY KOSCIOLEK/THE POINTS GUYWhere to get it: Coco’s on Norway Bliss, Norwegian Encore and Norway PrimaCost:$ 14TPG take: I’ll be coy: I found the ice cream and gelato options at Norwegian’s onboard additional- charge venues to be a bit boring. But, instead of ordering a shovel or two, I traded up a little — really a bit. The Cookies ‘ n’ Product Mad Milkshake from Coco’s is powerful. Dark chocolate dessert and cheese are blended and poured into a big tumbler drizzled with chocolates. Toppings include whipped product, M&, Ms, chocolate rain, full Oreo biscuits, a milk chocolate salad and sticky animals. It was a rich treat that left me so full I could n’t finish the entire thing, but I enjoyed the 3/4 I did manage to consume. Overall, it was just a chocolate milkshake with Oreos on top and other delectable accoutrements; it did n’t taste like cookies and cream. Virgin VoyagesGelato from Lick Me Till… Ice Cream, and 4/5 from GELato on Virgin Volas ‘ Resilient Lady. Select a flavour from the list, including vanilla, chocolate, cheese walnut, key salt pie, espresso device, raspberry beet, brown butter financier, etc. Either a glass or one of the three waffle cone flavors—regular, chocolate, or crimson velvet—is available. My private preference? in a dessert pancake cylinder, vanilla. The island receives extra points for its title, which drips with sexual innuendo like many other items on Virgin’s boats. Scoops, Royal CaribbeanA pancake cones, Ice milk from Cups &, and Spoops on the Allure of the Seas theme song by the royal Caribbean. The location of ASHLEY KOSCIOLEK/THE POINTS GUY: Allure of the Seas and Oasis of The SeaSCost: Prices range from$ 2.50 for a small to$ 4 for an enormous. For a cylinder, put 75 percent, and you can pay up to 50cents for the topping. For 16 grams, smoothies cost$ 4.50. Additionally, for$ 5.50, you can order a banana sundae with unlimited toppings, or for$ 4.25, choose from one of nearly 12 flavors of delectable cupcakes. Ice milk in a variety of traditional tastes, including fruit, chocolate, and chocolate, is served at Cups &, Scoops, along the Royal Caribbean Boardwalk on Deck 6. Personally, I chose a pancake cones with cookies, lotion, and, of course, sprinkles. Scoops wins my vote for the best location even though several Royal Caribbean ships have true stand-alone ice cream outposts, Cups &, and the venue’s cupcake sundaes are based on a variety of delectable cupcakes. The Godfather Premium Dessert Sundae, Princess Cruises, Coffee &, and Cones on Emerald Princess are given a 5/5 score for the movie. ASHLEY KOSCIOLEK/THE POINTS GUY Where to find it: Depending on the ship’s expense, all ships in the Princess ships at the ship ice cream shop are referred to as Coffee &, Cones, Gelateria, Curls or Scoop. All Premium Dessert sundae costs$ 12 unless you have a deal that covers the cost. You can give them a picture of your preferred booze for an additional$ 2. TPG take: Try one of six for-fee energy from Princess ‘ ship ice cream shops for a special treat almost any time of day. The Godfather is one of the best I’ve always had somewhere, and it’s also probably the greatest I have had on a ship. They all have Italian-themed brands. It’s a great combination of brownies, chocolate dessert, and chocolate sauce. It is packaged in a large, chocolate-and-sprinkler-adorned ice cream cup. Tuile, a cooked chip, is also typically included with it, but none was available when I placed my order, but the woman preparing my dessert replaced it with caramel popcorn. For impact, she even added a rainbow swirl lollipop, which is typically included with The Michelangelo sundae sold it. Ask for a complimentary cone of soft serve otherwise if you want something lighter or are trying to stay within your means. TPG score: 5/5 Soft-serve cones from Ripples, Carnival Cruise Line’s Mardi Gras buffet cone with Froot Loops topped off. There’s something special about being able to have ice cream at any time of evening, and Carnival delivers in spades. ASHLEY KOSCIOLEK/THE POINTS GUY Where to find it: All boats in the Carnival Cruise Line fleetCost: FreeTPG get Swirls, the route’s enormous stainless steel self-service ice cream and frozen yogurt machines, are not particularly expensive, but what they do serve is delightful. Pull the lever for do-it-yourself soft-serve, then select either a pot or cone. Typically, there are three flavor available at any given time: chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry, along with a combination that combines the two. The pleasant value and the 24-hour availability are unbeatable. By the soft-serve machines, you wo n’t find toppings, but keep a supply of cookies or Froot Loops from the buffet to stuff onto your cone to make your own concoction. Which ice cream in particular is my favorite, with a TPG score of 5/5 bottom line? Scoops, the cookies and milk at Royal Caribbean’s Cups andamp receive my unqualified voting. I’m more of a lover of cone than ice cream, despite what it might appear to be previously. The latter, in my opinion, is merely an accompaniment to put a little water to the crunch.
