In Mumbai, India, the construction of the highly anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport is advancing at a rapid pace, with authorities announcing that the airport will commence operations by March 31, 2025. As of now, approximately 63% of the construction work has been accomplished. Notably, the airport boasts a distinctive design inspired by the lotus flower, India’s national flower. With a staggering budget of Rs 16,700 crore, the project is under the stewardship of Adani Airport Holdings Limited, after the Adani Group assumed control from GVK Industries in 2021. The development of the new airport, initiated in 2018, aims to alleviate the strain on the congested Mumbai International Airport. Spanning across 1160 acres of land, the project unfolds in four phases, with the authorities targeting the operationalisation of the first two phases by the specified deadline. The entire airport is slated to be fully operational by 2032. Notable progress includes the completion of hill leveling and the successful alteration of the Ulwe River’s course to facilitate construction. Additionally, swamps have been filled, and high-tension transmission lines have been installed in the vicinity. The terminal and runway construction are nearing completion, featuring two runways measuring 3700 meters in length and 60 meters in width. As the countdown to its inauguration continues, the Navi Mumbai International Airport stands as a testament to India’s commitment to modern infrastructure and aviation excellence.

As China enters the summer-autumn flight season, the Chinese aviation industry witnesses a notable surge in both domestic and international air travel. Commencing this Sunday, the skies are set ablaze with activity, showcasing a robust growth trajectory in air transportation. According to the latest data released by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), a total of 188 domestic and international airlines are geared up to operate a staggering 122,000 passenger and cargo flights weekly during this season. This represents a significant uptick in air traffic compared to previous years. Domestically, 51 airlines are slated to run 101,536 domestic flights per week, marking a 2.5 percent increase from last year and a substantial 38.29 percent surge from 2019 figures. Meanwhile, the CAAC has greenlit 17,257 weekly passenger and cargo flights for 164 domestic and international carriers, connecting 70 countries worldwide. Notably, 51 Belt and Road partner countries are encompassed in this network. In light of these developments, the CAAC has outlined strategic measures focusing on bolstering domestic operations while expanding global connectivity. These include initiatives to analyze market trends, enhance route optimization, and streamline flight services to improve passenger experience. Internationally, the aviation sector is witnessing encouraging signs, with flights to Ireland resuming and new routes being introduced by domestic and foreign carriers. Notable spikes in passenger traffic have been observed in neighboring countries such as Vietnam, Japan, Laos, and Russia. Additionally, the recent announcement of increased passenger flights between China and the United States underscores a positive outlook for trans-Pacific travel. The ripple effects of visa-free policies are also evident, with significant growth recorded in flights to various destinations including Hungary, Austria, Spain, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore. These developments contribute to the gradual recovery of China’s inbound and outbound tourism, with a notable surge in foreign trips recorded in the first two months of 2024. Looking ahead, the CAAC remains committed to supporting national strategies and meeting passenger demands by facilitating increased capacity and the opening of new routes, particularly with countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative. As the aviation sector takes flight into the summer-autumn season, China’s skies promise to remain vibrant and dynamic, reflecting the nation’s resilience and determination in navigating post-pandemic challenges. In a bid to alleviate congestion in existing flight paths overseen by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Thailand is in discussions with China and Laos regarding the establishment of new air routes. Nopasit Chakpitak, President of Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Co Ltd (Aerothai), announced on March 29 that once the three nations reach an agreement on the proposed aviation routes connecting Thailand and China via Laos, they will seek approval from the ICAO. Chakpitak indicated that if approved, these routes could potentially open as early as 2026, provided they meet the stringent safety requirements set by the ICAO. Highlighting the rapid expansion of the airline industry in Asia, particularly in China and India, with over 1,000 aircraft purchase orders, Chakpitak emphasized the pressing need for increased airspace capabilities to accommodate this growth. Aerothai, a state enterprise under the Ministry of Transport, is thus taking proactive measures to address this demand. The planned parallel routes between Thailand and China are intended to facilitate flights connecting northern Thai provinces such as Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai with major Chinese cities including Kunming, Guiyang, Chengdu, Tianfu, Chongqing, and Xian. Aerothai’s projections suggest a significant increase in flights to Thailand, with an anticipated rise from 800,000 in 2023 to over 900,000 in the current year. This figure is expected to surpass 1 million by 2025, reinstating pre-pandemic levels of air traffic to the country.
