Last Updated 1 minute agoA record-breaking 1.2 million people visited Cancun over Easter weekend, and hotel occupancy exceeded 85 %, according to Riviera Maya News.
Due to its beautiful beaches, abundance of all-inclusive resorts, and close contact to the U.S. with daily flights from 40+ cities, Cancun continues to be the most popular travel destination in Mexico for Americans. In fact, it is the most traveled foreign destination in the world for Americans.
However, this means that Cancun is getting really filled, and not to mention expensive.
Other seaside locations near, like Playa del Carmen and Tulum, are crowded and pricey, too.
Test out these underappreciated Hispanic Caribbean locations if you’re looking for less expensive and more economical alternatives to Cancun:
1. Bacalar
If you want to travel more cheaply and with fewer holiday masses, Bacalar is the ideal tropical getaway.
Although it’s becoming a trendy destination, it’s still relatively unknown — but that wo n’t be the case in just a few years!
The ideal time to visit Bacalar is right away, before more people become aware of it.
The drive from Cancun to Bacalar takes 4 hours, 30 minutes, or 2 hours, 45 minutes, from Tulum, where a brand-new international airports has just opened.
Due to the varying blue and turquoise water that the town has, this charming town is actually located on the shores of Lake Bacalar, a freshwater lake known as the” Lake of Seven Colours.”
It’s a wonderfully inexpensive, authentic, and laidback destination compared to much of the rest of the very recreational Mexican Caribbean.
2. Mahahual
Mahahual is a less expensive and packed option to travel to than Cancun.
Mahahual is not exactly a hidden gem; it is a frequent stop on some Caribbean cruise timetables and home to the Costa Maya cruise port.
When vacations are in port, some thousand time- trippers descend on Mahahual.
However, large cruise ships are n’t in port every day, and on the days when there are n’t any cruise ships, this small town is very quiet and laidback.
Even on days with cruise ships, things start to calm down when the cruise boats begin to depart in the late evening.
There are n’t as many luxurious all-inclusive resorts in Mahahual as there are in Cancun. But what you can find in Mahahual is affordable, relaxed beachfront hotels for less than$ 100 a night.
Mahahual is 4 hours and 30 days from Cancun by car or van, and 2 hours and 45 days from Tulum.
3. Puerto Morelos
Puerto Morelos is a fantastic substitute to the overcrowded Hispanic Caribbean destination that is only 25 hours south of Cancun International Airport.
On the very developed Riviera Maya, Puerto Morelos has established itself as a more authentic vacation spot.
It lacks Playa del Carmen and Cancun in the northwest as well as the tourist destinations.
You can still find beachfront hotels in Puerto Morelos for less than$ 125 per night despite its very convenient location and proximity to two more expensive destinations.
Going out to eat or grab a drink in Cancun wo n’t cost you nearly as much as it would in the town itself, which has a more laid-back vibe.
4. Holbox
Lastly, Holbox is another excellent Mexican Caribbean destination that costs less than Cancun and is much less crowded.
One of the world’s best coastlines can be found on this tranquil area.
Golf carts and bike are the preferred means of transportation for traveling around this tiny island because cars are prohibited on it.
It’s a secluded getaway from the hustle and bustle of Cancun.
To get to Holbox, you’ll first need to travel or take a vehicle from Cancun to Chiquila, which is about 1 hour and 35 hours apart.
Next, you’ll need to board a boat in Chiquila to achieve Holbox. The boat time is only 25 minutes.
